City Attorney’s Office

The City Attorney’s Office provides general legal counsel to the City of San Rafael, including the City Council and City officials.

The City Attorney is the attorney for the City of San Rafael, and is elected by voters of the City of San Rafael. The attorney in the City Attorney's Office, Genevieve Coyle, provides legal services to the City Council  and the various agencies, boards, commissions and offices of the City of San Rafael. The City Attorney's Office also prosecutes violations of the San Rafael Municipal Code, but not any violations of State law. The District Attorney is an elected official who investigates and prosecutes criminal activity (other than violations of the San Rafael Municipal Code) throughout Marin County.
