HOW TO MAKE A WHARF HYDRANT (FORWARD HOSE LAY)
- Command “Make the Hydrant” is given by the Officer
- Firefighter leaves riding position and goes to engineers’ compartment
- Removes 3” or 2 ½” bypass hose
- Roll out bypass line for distance, with female end to hydrant
- Firefighter goes to tailboard
- Fastening device for appliance is removed
- Remove Oasis valve from engine
- Place one arm through hydrant strap
- Remove appliance with both hands and carry to male end of bypass line
- Place on ground
- Anchor hose line
- Grasp LDH from outside with hands, drop hose if it hangs up while laying
- Signal engine to “take off”
- Verbally and visually signal by shouting “take off” with a forward hand movement
- Stand clear of hose in case of hang up with supply hose
- Remove fitting bag from LDH
- Obtain necessary fitting and appropriate wrench
- Connect 2 ½” x 4 ½” increaser to bypass hose male end
- Connect appliance to increaser
- Inlet of appliance with swivel
- Remove kinks or folds in hose back to hydrant
- Remove cap from hydrant
- Using appropriate wrench
- Place cap on ground
- Place wrench on stem
- Connect female end of bypass hose to hydrant
- Receive signal for water
- Verbally from engine
- Verbally by radio
- Visually if you can see the clamp in place
- Charge hydrant
- Slowly all the way on then back ¼ turn
- Remove kinks at hydrant
- Follow supply line to engine
- Remove kinks
- Consider access
